Arboriculture is the cultivation of trees for any reason other than the production of timber. In other words it is working with trees in parks, gardens, roadsides and so forth. This work can include tasks such as felling, pruning, protecting, planting and dealing with pests and diseases affecting a tree.
Trees play an important role to a great many species of insects, birds, mammals and other plants. By promoting what a tree has to offer to neighbouring wildlife it has the chance to improve the biodiversity of a local region.
2010 has been designated as the International Year of Biodiversity by the United Nations in an attempt to promote the importance of wildlife to the Earth. Trees play a huge part in biodiversity by proving food and habitats for many species of insects, birds, mammals and reptiles.
