Trees make fantastic habitats for many species of animals, including birds, bats, small mammals and insects. Naturally occuring cracks, cavities and branch forks can often make suitable nesting roosts, but not all trees have these to offer. By installing artificial habitat boxes in your trees you could improve the chances for wildlife use at key times in the year, such as when rearing young and hibernating over winter.

In December 2010 Harmony Arboriculture was involved in a voluntary project installing a number of traditional wood and Schwegler woodcrete bat boxes at Coed-Y-Felin, Cardiff. Assissted by members of the Friends Of Coed-Y-Felin and BTCV Cymru, we managed to install fifteen boxes in various trees throughout the woodland.

Shwegler habitat boxes
Schwegler have been making a wide variety of habitat boxes for over 50 years and their woodcrete nest boxes have proved to be a remarkable success. Over 8.5 million of them have been placed in woods, orchards and gardens throughout Europe, the USA and Canada and in many other countries. They are made from a mixture of wood, clay and concrete, making them more durable and longer-lasting than traditional softwood boxes. Many species of animal prefer the more natural feel of Schwegler woodcrete boxes.
